Brennan’s Fish House is located in a historic building in the small village of Grand River, Ohio. The outside is plain compared to its neighbor, Pickle Bill’s Lobster House. But step inside and you will feel transported to a small fishing village in New England. It’s tempting to spend a few minutes just walking around and looking at all the nifty historic items tacked to the walls. The nautical theme includes an 8 foot ship’s wheel suspended from the ceiling. The wood floors, paneling and beautifully polished bar add to the maritime ambiance.
We always start with a steaming hot bowl of clam chowder. Brennan’s offers both a red Manhattan style clam chowder and white creamy New England style. My family is split on their preferences but both are delicious. There are many appetizer choices which include fried oysters, fried frog legs and calamari.
My favorite entrée is the crab cake. Brennan’s crab cake recipe is famous, full of crab meat not fillers, and perfectly seasoned. It is the biggest crab cake in town and is available as an appetizer, as a dinner entrée and as a sandwich. I often get just the crab cake and a salad or coleslaw. My husband chooses either the Lake Erie perch or fried walleye. Both are available as a dinner or sandwich and the portions are generous. These dinners come with Brennan’s own hand cut fresh French fries, creamy coleslaw, bread and butter.
No matter what your seafood preference, they pretty much have it all, including clams, shrimp, scallops, catfish and haddock. In the mood for crab legs? You can get a 2 pound pot full for $ 29.50! Just can’t decide? Order the Fisherman’s Platter that includes golden fried shrimp, scallops, Lake Erie Yellow Perch, Whitefish and a Crab Cake. Baked and mashed potatoes are available as sides for these entrees.
Don’t worry if you have some non-seafood folk in your group. Brennan’s also has a “shore” menu of hamburgers, steaks and chicken.
I don’t usually have room for dessert but I have taken home a very authentic piece of Key Lime pie on occasion. They offer other desserts too, just ask your server what’s available.
We take all of our out-of-town visitors to Brennan’s. Repeat visitors always ask to return. It’s a great place in Lake County to give your friends and family a taste of Western Reserve history and fantastic seafood.
