Heart of Willoughby Hosts Last Stop Willoughby
About this time each summer, passersby can spot Historic Lolly the Trolley rolling down the streets of Downtown Willoughby. That’s because Last Stop Willoughby, hosted by the Heart of Willoughby, is in full swing. Saturday, August 20 marks the fourth year for the event and it will feature more activities for all ages including Lolly the Trolley.
Among the various activities, the famous trolley tours will return again, but with a little flair. Historic Lolly the Trolley tours will run from noon–7 p.m. and this year a special Haunted Trolley tour will spook from 7-9 p.m. Train displays will also be included this year as well as viewings of "A Stop in Willoughby," a Willoughby-inspired Twilight Zone.
Last Stop Willoughby truly begins at 8 a.m. with the Willoughby Outdoor Market featuring a variety of vendors from Northeast Ohio offering fruits, vegetables, breads, pastries and more. And at 10 a.m., Downtown Willoughby’s retail merchants will kick off their sidewalk sales.
The biggest addition this year is "The Taste of Willoughby." Participating Downtown Willoughby restaurants will set up shop on the sidewalks and serve selections from their menus from noon-8 p.m. After trying all the food, guests will be able to vote for their favorite to determine who reigns supreme in a "People’s Choice" competition.
Entertainment in the gazebo will begin at noon and include The Samantha Fitzpatrick Band, Plaid Sabbath, Terminal Blues Band and Joe’s Music.
Families should be sure to catch the parade at 2 p.m. And kids will also enjoy arts and crafts and games in the KidZone at Point Park.
For specific event times and more information please visit www.DTWilloughby.com.
Annual Lake County PerchFest™ finishes summer with a splash
Enjoy a perch dinner right on a Lake Erie beach during the Lake County PerchFest™, Ohio’s largest Lake Erie yellow perch fish fry at the 25-acre Fairport Harbor Lakefront Park, September 9, 10, and 11. Free admission allows more visitors during challenging economic times to discover the east side of Lake Erie in Lake County. Over 8,000 meals are served in the three-day event, which has been featured on The Travel Channel.
Fish fry vendor Chris Bennett uses only Lake Erie yellow perch, coated with a light, seasoned breading, fried in canola oil. "Perch is a favorite delicacy, with a vast culinary and emotional appeal," noted Bob Ulas, Director of the Lake County Visitors Bureau. "The PerchFest™ has grown into an autumn tradition, drawing repeat visitors, who hopefully will return often to enjoy Lake County’s coastal recreational attractions," continued Ulas.
Live entertainment with new bands and expanded youth activities are planned this year. The youth fishing tank stocked with perch, bass, trout and bluegill will again get parents and children excited about fishing. "The fishing tank introduces children to fishing in an easy, entertaining way," noted Fred Haas of the Chagrin River Salmon Association, new operators of the fish tank.
About 300 adults and children enter the perch fishing contest yearly. Permits are sold for "Ohio’s Best Perch Fishing Champion" contest, Saturday and Sunday, September 10 and 11. "Perch fishing gives more anglers a chance to compete as perch fishing requires less costly fishing equipment. Minnows on a hook dropped in a hungry Lake Erie school of perch is all it takes," added Jim Shirley, PerchFest™ Chairman. A perch fishing permit is only $5 for adults and $1 for youth and can be purchased at select bait and tackle shops in and near Lake County. There is a $500 first place adult prize for the best five perch caught by measurement. For rules, permit purchase outlets and further information, visit www.perchfest.net or call the Lake County Visitors Bureau 800-368-LAKE (5253).

Penitentiary Glen’s gorge can be appreciated on a guided hike through the area.

The park is open year round from sunrise to sunset and has a calendar full of events and programs for intense explorers and families alike, including everything from art exhibits to snowshoeing in the winter and gorge hikes in warmer weather.

Admission is free, but certain evening events and programs require registration.
Indoors, the Nature Center houses hands-on exhibits, art shows, an award winning "Window on Wildlife" and The Nature Store. Lake County can quench your thirst!
Welcome to our July e-newsletter! We are very happy to see summer here in Lake County – we love our patios, outdoor activities and summer fun and that all fits perfectly with our breweries and wineries. So kick off summer by bringing your thirsty palates to Lake County for distinctive micro-brewed beer and unusual wines from far away lands. Lake County is home to brewers who produce unique, quality beer and wines and we invite you to visit and explore them all. Please enjoy browsing what’s happening in Lake County this summer and find us on Facebook for quick access to summer activities and events.
Debonné Vineyards is the first winery in Ohio with a growing micro brewery operation in addition to its estate winery productions. Cellar Rats Brewery in Madison, Ohio is three years old and growing. It started as a three barrel system and has grown to a two or three barrel batch a day operation. By July 15, the brewery will have 15 double barrel batches equaling 30 barrels ready to go. Cellar Rats Brewery offers many unique brews including a dark raspberry porter which after tasting, all questions about a dark summer beer will disappear.
Cornerstone Brewery in Madison’s quaint downtown district features three great summer beers. The first, Erie Blue, is made with raspberries and black cherries. The Angry Gorilla is made with bananas, pears, cloves and bubblegum and is actually a Bavarian Hefeweizen light wheat beer. The final summer specialty is called Patriot Red, an amber ale with a robust American hop character.
Willoughby Brewing Company in historic Willoughby’s bustling historic downtown district has the motto "Make Better Beer," and it shows. The brewery is a two-time award winner at the IX Center International Brew Fest. When you stop by, try the two winners – Peanut Butter Cup Coffee Porter and the "Christmas in July" brew or buy a sampler and try the many others on tap. The Willoughby Brewing Company is also a snazzy restaurant with a great menu that came under new management at the beginning of 2011.
If you are interested in brewing yourself, take a look at Little Mountain Brewing Company. This brew-on-premises (BOP) business makes home brewing more accessible and more affordable to beer enthusiasts. It supplies the equipment and recipes, for a fee, and it’s just a short stop away in Willoughby, Ohio.
Lake County is also keeping pace with the new trend of urban wineries. Bene Vino Urban Winery in Perry
and the Barrel Room Winery of Wickliffe are part of the new trend of wineries located in industrial or city settings, buying grapes from national and international sources to produce fine wines.
So get your summer moving and think Lake County for micro breweries and urban wineries – we hope to see you soon!
Bob Ulas, Executive Director – Lake County Visitors Bureau

Sounds odd, but visitors to Lake Metroparks’ Penitentiary Glen Reservation can do just that during the spring art show…sort of.
Artist Jim Polewchak is a life-long Lake County resident who grew up playing in many of the green areas that have since become part of Lake Metroparks. See the park system come to life through the medium of oil painting in this special one-man show. “You really see the park for what it is and notice things that others just pass by,” said Polewchak, reflecting on his hours spent painting in the parks. “Many of the parks are near and dear to my heart because I grew up here and as a child I would roam and play in the woods. I still do!” Jim’s artwork is available for purchase and proceeds benefit the Penitentiary Glen Nature Center.
